Change Failure Rate Calculator

Enter your change failure rate — failed deployments divided by total deployments, as a percentage — to see where it lands against the cited DORA stability benchmarks.

The calculator

What share of deployments cause a failure needing a hotfix, rollback, or patch? (%)

How to read your band

Change failure rate is one of the four DORA metrics and the key stability signal. Bands approximate the performance clusters in the Accelerate State of DevOps Report 2023 (Google Cloud / DORA). Want all four metrics at once? Use the full DORA metrics calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is change failure rate?
Change failure rate (CFR) is the share of deployments to production that cause a failure needing remediation — a hotfix, rollback, or patch. Compute it as failed deployments divided by total deployments, as a percentage.
How do I calculate change failure rate?
Divide the number of deployments that caused a failure by the total number of deployments over the same period, then multiply by 100. For example, 3 failures out of 60 deploys is 5%.
What is a good change failure rate?
Against the Accelerate State of DevOps Report 2023 clusters, roughly 5% or lower maps to Elite, 6–10% to High, 11–15% to Medium, and above 15% to Low.
How do I lower change failure rate?
Smaller, more frequent changes; stronger automated tests and CI gates; progressive delivery (canary / feature flags); and fast, rehearsed rollback. Each reduces the blast radius of a bad change.
